This summer, Johns Hopkins will host a graduate student fellowship designed to prepare emerging data scientists to leverage the latest developments in generative artificial intelligence and machine learning to solve real-world social impact problems.

The Data Science for Social Good Fellowship will be managed by the Bloomberg Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins, known as GovEx, in collaboration with the School of Government and Policy. The fellowship is a 10-year-old program that has been hosted by other leading universities around the world including the University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford. Fellows will be hosted on the Homewood campus for 10 weeks, from May 25 to July 31. The application is open now through March 1; more information can be found at https://dssgfellowship.org/.

“Our center is dedicated to helping cities leverage data and AI to transform the lives of their residents, and we are so proud to be a member of the JHU community where we can collaborate with world-leading faculty and students,” says Oliver Wise, executive director of GovEx. “This fellowship will give promising students the opportunity to work directly with cities at the leading edge of innovation in the field to develop solutions to stubborn problems and prepare them to be the next generation of public sector leaders.”

GovEx and the School of Government and Policy will facilitate the fellowship in collaboration with Rayid Ghani, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University and founder of the fellowship program. Ghani will be a visiting fellow at GovEx.

“We are excited to host the Data Science for Social Good Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and to bring together talented graduate students from across the country to apply data science and AI to real social challenges, generating measurable impact while training the next generation of socially responsible AI leaders,” Ghani says.

GovEx will match clusters of fellows with cities that the organization has worked with in the Bloomberg Philanthropies City Data Alliance, which helps city leaders develop data and AI strategies to address urban challenges. Graduate students with a passion for solving problems and background in programming, statistics, and data analysis skills are encouraged to apply.
